Double opt-in & consent

Silo requires that everyone you email asked to hear from you. Double opt-in is the simplest way to prove it, and it keeps typos, fake addresses and spam traps off your list.

How double opt-in works

  1. Someone signs up on your hosted signup page or embedded form.
  2. They're added as pending. Pending people don't count toward your plan and don't receive your campaigns.
  3. Silo sends a confirmation email through your own sending provider. You can write your own subject and body.
  4. The link in that email opens a page on your link domain with a Confirm button. Silo asks for a click rather than confirming on page load, because some mail security scanners open every link in a message, and that shouldn't count as consent.
  5. After they confirm, they're subscribed, and any follow-up sequence you attached starts.

New lists created in Silo have double opt-in switched on. You can turn it off per list if you collect consent some other verifiable way, but we recommend keeping it on.

What Silo records

For each subscriber, Silo keeps evidence of how they joined: the source (for example a signup page, a form, api, shopify or import:mailchimp) and the time. For imports, the original opt-in time is kept when the export includes it. If a spam complaint or a regulator ever asks how someone got on your list, this is your answer.

Store customers

Buying from your Shopify or WooCommerce store is not consent to marketing. Silo subscribes a buyer only when the store reports that they opted in at checkout. Everyone else is kept as a contact for your records, never mailed, and not counted toward your plan.

Unsubscribes and the preference center

  • Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link and the list-unsubscribe headers that let Gmail, Yahoo and others show their own one-click unsubscribe button.
  • Subscribers can open a preference center to choose topics or leave entirely.
  • An unsubscribe is permanent for that list. The API, imports and store sync will not re-subscribe that person; only a new opt-in through a signup page can.

Your postal address

US law (CAN-SPAM) requires a valid physical postal address in every commercial email. Silo adds a footer with the address you enter in your settings and won't send marketing email without one.

What is never allowed

Purchased, rented, shared or scraped lists, and addresses collected without clear consent, are prohibited on Silo. See the Acceptable Use Policy.
